This year the Government of Saskatchewan launched a special drive "Wide
Open Future" to encourage settlement in the beautiful province of
Saskatchewan. To help further this noble cause, I would like to introduce
our readers to Saskatchewan and its two largest cities, Regina and
Saskatoon.
Saskatchewan
is a great place to live. Canada’s sunniest province has two large
metropolitan cities (Regina
and Saskatoon) nestled in an array of charming farming towns tucked
amongst one hundred thousand lakes in wide-open country. Saskatchewan’s
expanse skies offer spectacular views of sunrise and sunset during the day
and clear starry constellations and magical northern lights at night.
Being agriculture and heavy oil Capital of Canada, Saskatchewan has the
second lowest provincial sales tax, no health premiums, and some of the
lowest utility and auto insurance rates in the country. This all adds up
to one of the best places in the world to call home.
Regina This is
a very special year for my home and Saskatchewan’s capital city, Regina.
On June 19th Regina is celebrating its centennial celebrations.
One hundred years old Regina offers an excellent quality of life in its
progressive yet family oriented friendly community.
Regina
is located in middle of the Great Prairies of Western Canada on
Trans-Canada highway, 570 km west of Winnipeg, 765 km east of Calgary
and 175 km North of the US border. With a population of 200,000 Regina
is just the perfect size. Large enough to offer first class
attractions, events and
amenities,
but small enough that you can travel from one end of the city to the
other in less than half an hour. People are friendly and courteous.
Regina
is birthplace of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and home to
its Training Academy and National Museum. Beautiful Wascana Lake in
the middle of Regina is surrounded by green parks, bike and jog
trails, Legislative Building, Science Center, Kramer Imax Theater,
Saskatchewan Center of the Arts and Royal Saskatchewan Museum.
Canada’s sunniest capital has no traffic jams, urban sprawls or long
lineups in banks, restaurants or city buses. With an average housing
price of under $100,000, Regina has the lowest cost of living among
major North American cities.
Regina
is also home to Canada’s 6th best comprehensive university
(according to McLean’s latest rankings). Its beautiful campus is located
in the Wascana Center, the largest urban park in North America. The
University
of Regina offers excellent programs in a wide range of subjects from
education and social work to journalism and engineering. Application
deadline for new students for most programs is July 1st.
Saskatoon
Saskatoon,
Saskatchewan’s
largest city is situated on the Yellowhead Highway, 830 km Northwest
of Winnipeg, 530 km Southeast of Edmonton, 260 km Northwest of Regina
and 350 km North of the US border. Saskatoon is a vibrant city of
215,000 people. It boasts all of the
amenities of a large, dynamic, cosmopolitan centre while
City Center and
South Saskatchewan River, Saskatoon
retaining the hospitality, safety of a smaller centre. Clean and
smog-free Saskatoon straddles the banks of the wide South Saskatchewan
River, which flows right through the heart of the downtown core.
Flanking the river is breathtaking riverbank, ribboned with jogging
and bicycling paths. Seven bridges cross the river. Arts
and culture events are regular in the summer. Many world class
attractions include Western Development
Museum, Diefenbaker Canada
Center, Saskatoon Zoo, Saskatchewan Place, and a number of galleries,
museums and theaters. Six thousand years of habitation can be explored
at the Wanuskewin Heritage
Park. Saskatoon enjoys more hours of sunshine than any other major
Canadian city. In the winter, cross-country ski trails and outdoor
skating is most common. With an average house price of only $117,000,
Saskatoon is one of Canada’s most affordable cities. No wonder it was
rated best small city in Canada.
World-renowned
University of
Saskatchewan calls Saskatoon its home. It has Canada’s only and
world’s fourth most powerful lightsource synchrotron.
It is the only university in Canada to house all five health science
colleges and a major teaching hospital on the same campus. It offers one
of the most diverse education programs in Canada including agriculture,
law, veterinary medicine, nursing, pharmacy, medicine, engineering and
physical therapy. Most application deadlines for new students range from
May 15th to August 15th. Innovation Place, located
on the university grounds, is one of the most successful university
related research parks in North America. It has the most advanced
bio-processing facility in Canada and a number of world ranking bio-tech
companies.
